Alexander M.

Private tutor in Roma, Italy

Education

MPhil in Ancient History from Oxford University, St Hugh's College (2014) writing my thesis on the emperor Caligula and his imitation of Alexander the Great. First Class B.A. in History and Ancient History from the University of Exeter (2012). My dissertation was on the mythologisation of the Titanic. Specifically, it looked at how the Edwardians shaped the narrative, turning the disaster into a triumph of masculine heroism and selfless sacrifice, and how Christian commentators tried to use the disaster to move society away from secularisation and an increased faith in technology and towards a return to more traditional, Christian values.

Experience

I currently teach a B2 English course in Landscape Architecture at Rome's Sapienza University and Viterbo's Tuscia University. Previously, I have taught both privately and in affiliation with language schools, and have experience with all ranges of levels (A1 - C2) and age groups. I have extensive experience teaching business English and preparing students for the IELTS, PET and First Certificate exams.

Hobbies

In my spare time, I love nurturing my passions for sport and music. I'm an avid Wolverhampton Wanderers FC fan, ping-ponging between Roma and Fiorentina whie in Italy, and I'm a borderline tennis obsessive (though a recent Achilles injury has temporarily put this on hold). I play both guitar (grade 8) and piano (grade 5) and sing—both in the shower and, when asked, at friends' weddings.
